Many of us have prayed and prayed for something in our lives. Meanwhile, God has a better plan. He has something better for you, even though in the place that you’re in, it seems the answer to your prayers would be total deliverance. But God sees the rest of your life.

In chapter 3 of Acts, Peter and John come across a lame beggar, who asks them for gold and silver. Peter and John tell him they’ll give him something better—the ability to walk, so he can go out and make a living wherever he likes. All this man desires is money so he can eat the next day. This is what he’s been begging for all his life. But Peter and John tell him they’re going to give him the greater blessing, and allow him to have a full, abundant life.

I look at this and wonder how many times we’ve prayed for something and God had something better or grander. I look back at my own life and see that if prayers were answered at certain times, I wouldn’t be teaching the gospel. I’d be doing something different. But God had a higher purpose. A better plan that took me from point A to point B to point C to get me where He wanted me so that I could have true riches in heaven.

God wants His best in your life. What’s holding you back is not knowing God’s best. Pray for the things that you need and that you desire. But leave the door open. Don’t create within you something false that says, “This is God answering my prayer.” Wait for the true answer of God. He’ll answer you every time.

Some things you have to just go with, and God's with you. You have to jump in, or take a step first. But most of the time we make plans on our own and then when we're knee-deep in trouble, we run back to God. In Matthew14:22-29, we read about Peter walking on the water. But Peter didn’t just jump out of the boat. He asked first. He said, “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.” And the Lord said, “Come.” Once he had the will of God, he walked on water. Find out what God’s will is in your life first.

The best way to do this is to be in a place where you can hear from God by participating in a Bible study and church. The number one source for God’s will is His word. For example, do you want healing? Every time Jesus was asked for healing, he said, “I will.” Also, when there’s a time of need for food or provision, he always meets the need.

Is it God’s will that you have a job? Absolutely. The Bible says, “don’t be a sluggard.” It doesn’t tell you to wait for money to fall from Heaven. It tells us to go out and get a job and he’ll bless the fruit of your labor.

The Bible also tells us how to be a good husband or wife, parent, single person, friend. It tells you how to be a good leader in a church, or a good member. It tells you what you should do with your money, how to work, how to play. There are many answers in there.

The Holy Spirit also speaks to us in prayer, or through other people as prophetic words. Jesus said, "It's expedient for you that I go, that the Spirit of truth may come.” The biggest blessing that we all have is that the very Spirit of God is deposited in us, and comes upon us, to lead and guide us. Pray and listen to that voice. It’s the voice of God telling you what to do, and then you can have confidence that God will answer your prayers.
