Faith
"But David said to Abishai, 'Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD's anointed and be without guilt?' David also said, 'As the LORD lives, surely the LORD will strike him, or his day will come that he dies, or he will go down into battle and perish. The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD's anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head and the jug of water, and let us go.'"
-1 Samuel 26:9-11 NASB
David makes a huge move of faith in this passage. In this passage, he and some of his men met Saul while he was sleeping in a camp. Saul had been visciously pursuing David, and David had the chance to end it right there as he slept.
David knew that God had chosen him to be king. He knew the WHAT. What was going to happen was that David would become king. But HOW it was to happen was still a mystery to him. After all, Saul was still on the throne, and surely one of his own sons would be expected to take the throne from him when he died. In many Christians' walks, the revelation of WHAT God wants to do through us is the highest aim; the greatest goal. If we could ask God one question, many would ask what He's going to do with our lives. A lot of people wouldn't be satisfied with that, though. They'd want to know HOW He's going to do it. It's not enough to just see the end of the journey. People crave the "how," the knowledge of the process. Fullness comes when we see how things come to be.
A healthy Christian walk needs to crave the "how" that accompanies the "what," because only when it does can we understand that waiting on God doesn't end in the revelation, but in the consummation. Many people wait until God reveals something and once He does, they think it's their duty to take it from there. God reveals His will for someone to go on a missions trip, and then the missionary takes all the weight of fundraising upon his or her own shoulders. But if it's God who's calling, it's God who's providing. Trusting and waiting on God with a missions trip lasts all the way from the preparation to go to the trip itself.
God told David the WHAT, that he would become king in place of Saul. But David also craved the HOW from God. He knew that if God had appointed Saul to be king, and himself to replace him, then God also had a plan to complete that bridge. David knew it wasn't his duty to get Saul off the throne, and his faith in God's providence in the matter maintained a clear conscience in him by keeping his hands free of blood. Sure enough, Saul's death did come in battle, and David arose to the throne of Judah and eventually all of Israel. The fruition of God's specific Will in our lives may require action or inaction. Sometimes we may have to step up and do what God's telling us to do. Other times like in David's case, we're simply told to be patient and wait.
God's not going to send you on an easter egg hunt. He won't tell you that His will is out there, but that you must go search for it. He'll reveal His plan for you in HIS timing, in HIS way. A God who wants the very best for His children won't do anything less than present His specific will for our lives to us with excitement and joy. If God hasn't revealed something to you, it's probably for one of three reasons:
-It's not His will for you to do that particular thing.
-It's not His timing for you to know, in which you should wait patiently for Him and submit to His timing.
-Your spiritual ears aren't attuned to hear His voice, in which case you should spend more time with Him daily.
It's HIS job to speak to US. But we must be ready to hear. Herein is the problem most people face, a problem which causes many people to believe that God's will must be searched for and not waited for.
Don't search for God's specific will in your life. Wait for it. God didn't call David, nor will He call us, to carry out His will in such a way that it violates our character.
