The Anointing of the Holy Spirit

An intimate knowledge of the Holy Spirit is equal to an intimate relationship with God.

“Father I pray that each one reading this study will be blessed with the Sprit of Truth. May your anointing fall upon the reader now. Open the scriptures to them Lord, and give each one wisdom, and a word prosperous for their life today. In Jesus name, Amen”

Learning about The Gifts of God’s Spirit and God’s Spiritual Gifts are essential to beginning and maintaining a successful Christian walk. Like a rare and beautiful diamond, the Spirit is multi-faceted, brilliant and colorful. The same Spirit may fall on many, but once having received it, the Spirit will express itself uniquely to each unique individual.

“As the Spirit of God descended upon the Lord Jesus, the head, so he also, in measure, descends upon the members of the mystical body. His descent is to us after the same fashion as that in which it fell upon our Lord. There is often a singular rapidity about it; or ever we are aware, we are impelled onward and heavenward beyond all expectation. Yet is there none of the hurry of earthly haste, for the wings of the dove are as soft as they are swift. Quietness seems essential to many spiritual operations; the Lord is in the still small voice, and like the dew, his grace is distilled in silence. The dove has ever been the chosen type of purity, and the Holy Spirit is holiness itself. Where he cometh, everything that is pure and lovely, and of good report, is made to abound, and sin and uncleanness depart. Peace reigns also where the Holy Dove comes with power; he bears the olive branch which shows that the waters of divine wrath are assuaged. Gentleness is a sure result of the Sacred Dove’s transforming power: hearts touched by his benign influence are meek and lowly henceforth and for ever. Harmlessness follows, as a matter of course; eagles and ravens may hunt their prey-the turtledove can endure wrong, but cannot inflict it. We must be harmless as doves. The dove is an apt picture of love, the voice of the turtle is full of affection; and so, the soul visited by the blessed Spirit, abounds in love to God, in love to the brethren, and in love to sinners; and above all, in love to Jesus. The brooding of the Spirit of God upon the face of the deep, first produced order and life, and in our hearts, he causes and fosters new life and light. Blessed Spirit, as thou didst rest upon our dear Redeemer, even so rest upon us from this time forward and for ever.” - Charles Spurgeon

In group situations, an anointing of the Holy Spirit is often compared to rain. A fellowship gathering may experience a sprinkling, or an all out downpour. For myself, I sometimes experience it as a small peaceful stream flowing from God into me. At other times it is like a great and powerful river that rushes over, and sweeps me along downstream with it!

The Holy Spirit is a gift from God that is given when we receive Christ as our Savior. It is purposeful in every situation we may ever face in life. The Spirit is a personal guide, a companion, a comforter, a teacher, and a light which reveals what the darkness tries to keep hidden. It is the power to perform miracles in Jesus name, and is the essence of fortifying Christians for good works carried out in service to mankind. Most importantly, the Holy Spirit is the Christian’s direct link to God, and visa versa. Without it, we will likely stumble along God's path and struggle with our faith. Biblical precepts may be learned but never completely understood or internalized. We will be subject to be blown about like a wave by the wind of every false teaching, and we will be in constant danger from attacks by the enemy. In a sense, the Holy Spirit is God’s eyes, ears, mouth, mind and heart of God working in us and through us to accomplish his will.

JOHN 20:19-23 When therefore it was evening, on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had said this, he showed unto them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. Jesus therefore said to them again, Peace be unto you: as the Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit: whose soever sins ye forgive, they are forgiven unto them; whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

With the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, God meant to empower us. He provided for our salvation, he provided a way for us to serve him through faith and not by fear, and he empowered us to wield a portion of his mighty strength. He empowered us to have faith in what is not seen. He empowered us to understand mysteries that go beyond understanding, and he empowered us to overcome all the power of the enemy. He provided a heavenly counselor, a comforter, a teacher, a guide; he provided us with a constant companion that would assist us in all we do. In fact, the Holy Spirit is our direct connection to God, through Jesus Christ, and all the power of the heavenly realms! The Holy Spirit is our umbilical cord to the heavenly womb from which all our blessings flow.

A Christian without the Holy Spirit is like a light bulb without electricity, or a fire without a flame. With just a little, we can live victorious, bright and shining lives. Without it our faith is clouded over, a constant struggle, burden and continuous mystery with little joy. Likewise, a Church without the workings of the Holy Spirit is impotent and is subject to continual problems, strife, and will inevitably be filled with false doctrine.

Many folks confuse being filled with the Holy Spirit with crazy people dancing around the pews, writhing about on the floor and speaking in strange tongues. Yes, an outpouring of the Holy Spirit can indeed inspire one to act in a unique and strange way. King David upon entering the city after having found the Ark of the Covenant, was filled with the spirit, ripped off his clothes down to his underwear, and danced merrily in front of the Ark procession crying out with joy. Fairly strange behavior for a King. On the other side of the coin, the Apostle Peter, having been filled with the spirit, delivered a powerful sermon to a crowd of thousands on the day of Pentecost. The word states that three thousand were added to their number on that day.

MATTHEW 28:19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:

MARK 13:11 And when they lead you to judgment, and deliver you up, be not anxious beforehand what ye shall speak: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye; for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit.

JOHN 14:26 But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.

ACTS 2:33 Being therefore by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath poured forth this, which ye see and hear.

"Oh," but you might say, "Those scriptures are all referring to the apostles receiving the Holy Spirit, not us modern day regular Joe type Christians." But the Apostle Simon Peter tells us differently.

ACTS 2:38, 39 And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him.

For to you is the promise, to your children, and to all who are far off. As many as the Lord our God shall call unto him!

Listen, this scripture should make it quite clear that the gift of the Holy Spirit, the spiritual gifts and all God has to offer is essential to our Christian walk, and we should desire all God has to offer us. Jesus prayed to God before he died that we would be as one with him as he is one with God, and that we in the body will be as one joined together in that same spirit.

I have a hard time understanding why this seems to be such a difficult concept for Christians to grasp. Why Churches don't teach and encourage the fulfilling of the Holy Spirit in it's membership, and why so many people just out right refuse to be filled with the Holy Spirit. On second thought, I do understand why. Because the enemy has worked long and hard to subvert the word, and quench the spirit at every turn since God made it freely accessible to all Christians.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, an anointing of the Holy Spirit is a personal and individual thing. One may speak in tongues, one may fall out on the floor; or another might receive a great comfort, and another might receive a deeper understanding. As we have studied in the previous five lessons, the Holy Spirit and gifts of the spirit are varied, multipurpose, and given to each person as God desires. The question is, do you desire this gift?
