Be a doer of the Word

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22.

Today we are forever learning, attending church and seminars and conferences, hearing hundreds of sermons, but failing to impart to a lost world what we know. We are head knowledge Christians only – because too few get into action in terms of evangelism.

We can memorize John 3:16 but it will never do the intended job if we keep it to ourselves. The world needs to know what it means.

A person will never obtain a driving licence if he can pass only the head knowledge test. He has to pass the physical driving test to get the licence. In the same way we can never be soldiers for Christ if content with mere head knowledge.

A young man studies law for several years, then becomes a lawyer – which is the purpose of his study. A would-be highway patrolman wanting action in his life goes to the police academy to sit and learn theory, but he knows after that he’s going to get on the streets and enforce the law.

Our problem is in many cases there is no end-result for us: the end result being we are saved to be used by God in saving others. We are students who continually remain students. We become bogged in the swamp of learning. A theological degree may feed our pride - but it does nothing for the lost world outside the church heading for hell.

Our purpose in studying the Word should be to become Christians who influence the world by our actions, spreading and proclaiming the gospel. We have to “be” Christianity rather than watch and listen to others talk about it. As James said, we have to become doers and not hearers only. We must also be more than lookers-on.

Instead of a “church retreat” we should be having a “church offensive.” We should not be busy in the church’s program which is usually inward-looking, but in Christ’s program which would have us being outward-looking.

Have prayer? Yes. Be led by the Holy Spirit? Yes. However, the important word is go, because that’s what Jesus said to do in Mark 16:15. It has to be important because it is the last thing He said before ascending.

We have to become much more than sanctified souls sitting smugly in the sanctuary. We cannot be sowers while the barrels of seed in the Word remain unscattered after we leave the church foyer.
