Far Above

When asked who was the greatest fighter pilot he ever saw, Gordon Cooper enthusiastically answered, "You're looking at him!" And on one "glorious day in May 1963 Gordo Cooper went higher, farther, and faster than any other American: 22 complete orbits around the world. He was the last American ever to go into space alone and for a brief moment, Gordo Cooper became the greatest pilot anyone had ever seen. " (From the movie The Right Stuff)
Leroy Gordon Cooper was one of the original Mercury astronauts. The seven men chosen to represent us in the space race with the Soviet Union became famous and were loved by fellow Americans. We knew their names and cheered as they rode their rockets into space.
Several years later, another brash young man stepped into the center ring of the public eye. With Olympic fervor, he would proclaim, ÒI am the greatest!Ó As he floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee, he backed up his bravado with actions and earned the title Heavyweight Champion of the World. Later, when Muhammad Ali refused to fight in Viet Nam, boxing authorities labeled him a controversial figure and stripped him of his title.
Gordo and Ali rose above the ordinary to achieve great recognition. However, Christ, who was far above any of the ranks and titles of angels listed in this verse, lowered Himself and came to give us the right stuff needed to reconcile us to God. The Lord is a warrior who came to earth and fought for Israel and our souls. The rulers of Israel and others thought He was rash, or blasphemous, in His statements concerning who He was. For three rounds, He stung them with jabs of truth. With fanciful footwork, He moved around the ring of Israel with His entourage. Yet, the leaders of the nation He chose rejected Him as their champion. Stirring public opinion against Him, they thought they had Him on the ropes, and sensing victory, these dopes moved in to deliver the final knockout blow. Stripped of His robe, but not His title, He was out for three days. But then, to their chagrin, He rose victoriously, completing a fight plan laid out before the world began. And when it was time for Him to return to the heavenly realms, He needed no Saturn V5 rocket to lift Him off the planet. He was and is and will always be our champion Jesus Christ Ñ King of kings and Lord of lords!
