When our son, Mario, was about four years old he overheard his mother and me discussing medical emergencies and blood transfusions. Mario, shortly came to me to find out what a blood transfusion was all about. At the time, I was busy helping his mother clean the bathroom so that I did not give him a very good answer. As some children do, Mario kept asking about this procedure. Finally, I told him, “Son, you won’t have to give anyone any of your blood. So don’t let it bother you, son, you’re too young! Okay!”
“But daddy,” he said. “I love to know what to do if someone ever needed blood. That’s all!”
On the same day we had our little discussion, nothing further was mentioned so I forgot all about it. However, a few days later, Mario came to me with a very, very sad look on his face. “Daddy, I made up my mind. If you and momma ever need blood, I’ m going to give you and momma all of mine. I’ll not let you and momma. Okay, dad!”
“Thanks you, son,” I said smiling as I did so.
It was just about a month and half later when I learned from Mario that he thought that he would have to give me or his mother all of his blood and would have to die in order for me or his mother to live. I explained to him that when a person needs a blood transfusion, they only give another person just one pint not all of their blood. Otherwise, they will die. I then showed him what a pint of blood look like by filling up a bottle that was available. I explained once again that he really did not need to be concerned—“you’re too young!” Still Mario insisted that he would do anything to save his mother and father from death should the time arise. I sat for at least two hours attempting to understand the full impact that my then four year old son would have been willing to do. That is, to sacrifice himself for his parents.
Then I thought about how willing Jesus had been to leave the beauty and happiness of heave, be born a human and then gave all of His Blood not just for one person/me but to all humanity before His presence or earth, during His life and all human life for the future to correct the sin we human casually commit every day! What a sacrifice!
