I wrote this after a fight with my girlfriend, realizing that God calls us to greater standards than the world, and to bridle our tongue, especially towards the ones we love so much.



-Verbal Victims-

Thoughts linger,
Words of contention creep to the edge of our brains
Threatening to spill out our lips, eyes, ears, whatever
Mostly, we fend them back, knowing the greater good
But sometimes we concede the battle
Let the dam collapse, they rush out
Piercing the air, the conversation
Like searing knives into
The side of an unsuspecting victim
A fist-fight of sorts interrupted
By a formerly concealed .357 magnum
And the people we protect
We love, cherish, adore, and need
Are all-too-often beaten down
Battered and bludgeoned by our
Very own words, insults and negativity
A lack of patience, of compassion and care
Pistol whips our victim,
The one we spend our lives
Protecting from being victimized by anyone else
