The Anvil? God's Word.

Have you ever had someone ask you how you know that the Bible is real, or how you know that it wasn’t just made up by men, and that the whole thing is nothing more than a book of history or literature? I recently had this question asked to me by someone very close to me, in fact by someone who had become a Christian at a young age. I was at first surprised to hear this coming from someone who never seemed to have doubts, but then I quickly remembered having struggled with this same question as a teenager, several years after having accepted Christ.

The person who asked me this question was visibly upset by the fact that her faith was being shaken, and she felt embarrassed and ashamed at having even had such questions to come up in her mind. The first thing I shared with my young friend was the fact that John the Baptist had taken his doubts straight to Jesus for resolution. While sitting in jail after having prepared the way for Jesus to be introduced into the world, and even after having baptized Jesus, John sent a message to Jesus asking Him the question, “Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?” (Luke 7:20 NASB) Rather than to shame or condemn John for his questioning, Jesus replied with great compassion that He was indeed the Messiah, and that John had testified about Him in truth.

I believe that this example of Jesus’ handling of John the Baptist’s doubts gives us all great hope when we question the validity of any aspect of our faith. I don’t believe we should be embarrassed by our doubts. In fact, I believe that these doubts often lead us to seek God even more diligently than before, and can ultimately lead to a greater faith than we ever had before. God’s Word is an anvil that cannot be worn out, and has always stood the test of time, surviving all “hits” made to it by insults or attempts to destroy it or to prove it is false. So go ahead……take out your hammer and bang on the anvil of God’s Word to see how strong and real it is. God will only respond with a gentle answer to show you that He is who He says He is, and can do what He says He can do as testified in His Word, The Bible.
