Immeasurable Greatness

What weighs six million pounds, is 131 feet long, 114 feet wide, rides on four double tracks, contains diesel engines that output nearly 8000 horsepower, has a fuel economy of 1/150th mile per gallon, moves at a top speed of 2 mph, cost $14 million to build in 1967 and can carry over 12 million pounds? Need some more clues? ItÕs the largest land vehicle ever built and is still being used in Florida. No, itÕs not the bus to the senior citizen center. ItÕs the Crawler Transporter that is used to move the Space Shuttle from the NASA assembly building to the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center.
Raised in West Virginia, IÕve seen powerful machines do their jobs at steel mills and strip mines. IÕve stood next to trucks that had tires that dwarfed me. IÕve seen steam shovels move huge amounts of dirt in a single bite; shovels built by the Marion Power Shovel Company. That same Ohio firm built the Crawler Transporter, as well, and that company builds the Marion 6360 stripping shovel. Standing 21 stories high, its bucket scoops 270 tons of dirt. ThatÕs twice the weight of a blue whale, and four of these rigs would outweigh the Titanic. These huge machines have changed the face of our planet as man has built roads, dams, airports, skyscrapers and canals. They all reveal tremendous power at work for mankind.
Yet, with all the incredibly powerful machines man has designed and used to shape our culture, we have yet to design a machine that can compare Ð even remotely Ð to the immeasurable greatness of God. His power is really incomparable to any power man can conceive and put to use. So Paul prays that we Ð His saints Ð may understand this incredible power that God has displayed in the past and is currently revealing through us.
What kind of power is it that can speak the universe into existence? What kind of power is it that can flood the earth with water or flood our hearts with His love? His power brought down plagues on Egypt and brought out His people with a strong hand. He parted the Red Sea for them, and He forced the sun and moon to stand still at JoshuaÕs request. That power, Paul says, is toward us who believe. And that power is the wonder workinÕ power of Jesus.
The power shovel of GodÕs grace has dug each one of us out of the slimy pit in which we were entrenched and set our feet on solid ground. His great power shattered our rock-hard hearts and moved us from death to life. His great power is working within us to help us want to do what pleases Him and, then, to do for us more than we could ever imagine. His power moves us to an unashamed proclamation of His Gospel. Mighty is our God - yours and mine!
