People often say to me that they can cope with Christianity but they just can’t cope with the church. Secular critics deride the church as an outdated, out of touch organization, that frankly, is on its last legs. Popular novelists portray the church as corrupt and inept. The media highlights the church's moral failure. And even within there is no shortage of voices, often employed by Bible colleges, who say the church is failing its mandate and needs revolution.

There is however another side. Last night a large team of volunteers led a ministry at our church called the Marriage Course. Fifty people from within and outside our church met for the fourth week in a row to try and learn how to improve their marriages. A large team of people is mobilized each week to seat, feed, and then challenge this group about their marriages. To feed 50 people in 35 minutes in a church hall requires a degree of commitment, cost and work. Setting up tables and chairs, setting tables, arranging flowers and decorations, and adjusting lighting begins the night; serving, clearing, washing up dinner; serving, clearing, washing up coffee and tea; administration, set up, video recorder, data projector - “Where is that power cord for the table lamp that helps with ambiance?”; “Who is taking the tablecloths home this week to wash?
