IT'S NOT THE FROTH THAT COUNTS
by Harry Hobbs

Try pouring a bottle of beer into a glass. If you are too eager to drink you will find your mouth will be full of froth and not the golden brown liquid that lies underneath. Too often, in life, it seems we are attracted by the showy pretentious stuff. Like the white foam on beer, these things lack anything deeper.

We are in love with material things. We want computers with faster modems or more sophisticated snow machines or extra horse power for our motorboat engines. Keeping up with our neighbours isn't enough. We want to outclass them in every way. We measure success by how many digits are in our savings account passbook at the end of a month. We think of these material things with pride as if they truly represent the kind of people we are.

Jesus spoke of this when He said: "The lilies of the field toil not neither do they spin"(Matthew 6:28 KJV) God garlands them in splendid array. Jesus was not suggesting that we shouldn't provide for our basic needs. Rather, He was reminding us to get our priorities straight. Our spiritual needs are far greater than our material ones.

Christ's teachings remind us that deeds produce results. We should always place the needs of others first. Like the beer drinker, we need to get beyond the froth and drink the brown ale of life. As Christians, our true worth can be measured not in our material assets but by how much we give of ourselves to others.
