Life is becoming more real
but it falls away when
I open the glossy magazine
and my eyes fix on the image
of the young woman
looking out into the world
with false desire.
For a second
buying into the perfume ad
saying there is more romance
"out there" than
where I am at with God.

Life is becoming more real
except when I'm driven to read
that book that promises me
all the answers.
and I forget to read THE BOOK
that has all the answers and
connect with the One
who gives me the answers,
then I find my soul in
the dust bowl, reaching
for the easy stimulant of chocolate.

Life is becoming more real
except when I get uneasy
about my faith
when I feel alone in it
in a crowd that may be fearful of it
so I cower in front of what feels like
a near-miss grenade.
I search for a rebuttal
when I could just
wait it out in trust
that I will be defended
and my actions with prove
what I know
and remember that
most are unaware of the
secret weapon of prayer.
