The Gift Of Love—A Mother’s Day Tribute

Yvonne was adopted into the Neash family when she was eleven months old.
Her adoptive mother and father loved Yvonne deeply, especially her mother. Through the years, Yvonne and her mother would talk with each other, attend church services, and participate in many mother-daughter social activities. A seemingly inseparable bond developed between this mother and daughter.
Then during Yvonne’s fifteenth year of life, she went through several periods of heart-rending adverse verbal exchanges with her mother. On Mother’s Day in 2003, following another heated exchange, Yvonne stood up from her computer desk then said to her mother, “You’re not my real mom! You’re just my adopted mom just like I’m adopted you! It’s nothing important.”
Tears weld in the eyes of her mother as she walked out of Yvonne’s room. But before her mother’s tears could spill over, Yvonne recognized that she deeply hurt the woman who had cared for her and loved unconditionally for more than fourteen years. Yvonne went to the kitchen, asked her mother for forgiveness and gave her a big hug. She said, “Mom, I borrowed you from God to help me learn about Him and life. God gave you to me to show me what unconditional love is like. I’ve borrowed you to love, too.”
The most basic unit of society is the family. How society fares will depend to a great extent on the strength of the home. Loving parents, especially mothers, have tended to give their children a sense of self worth, make them feel special and nurture them from childhood to adulthood and beyond. Motherhood along with fatherhood is the oldest profession among humankind ordained by God Himself (inspite of what many of us have been or are being told).
For those who still have their mothers or can “borrow” one for Mother’s Day, give her the gift of your love. It is also good to recall the positive influences that your mother has made on your life and the sacrifices she has made for you. Even if she has not been the best of mothers, she did allow you to live nearly sacrificing her life for you. If possible, thank your mother personally. If it is not possible thank God for her love for you.
