Biting The Hands That Sustains You

Theresa Ross, 18, saw an injured dog walking aimlessly down an Indianapolis street. Without giving it much thought, Theresa decided to help the injured dog by taking it home to wash, medicate and bandage its wounds. When Theresa extended a gentle hand to try to coax the dog to allow her to pick it up, the little dog bit her. So Theresa decided to feed the dog on the spot. She thought, “Maybe if I give him something to eat he’ll not bite me.”

Theresa opened her lunch box, removed its contents and then gave it to the dog. It ate the food quickly. Thinking she had won the dog’s friendship, she, once again, attempted to come to the injured dog’s assistance. As with her first attempt, the dog bit Theresa.

Theresa’s friend, Cyr McCormick, urged her to stop trying to save a dog that kept biting her.

“Cyr,” said Theresa, “It is the nature of a dog to bite. It is my nature to forgive, be compassionate, be merciful, and to love. Why should I take it out on this dog because it does what it is born to do and be? It is a dog.”

Likewise, humankind has a sin nature. Jesus knew that when He came to redeem ALL humans. Jesus has never, ever given up humankind even when a person continually and constantly commits sin, rejects His sacrifice or rejects His existence. Yet in spite of this, Jesus holds out His hands in unconditional love, forgiveness, with mercy and compassion to humankind that regularly bites His wounded hand. Do you bite His hands or run to them seeking salvation?
