Do not be disheartened if night
Speaks hard and bitter words to you,
If broken dreams have crushed your hope
And not one ray of light shines through.

We need the darkness and the tears,
We need the time of failing sight
If we're to reckon life's true worth,
And grow enough to stand the light.

For in the darkness seeds may grow
That never could with constant sun,
And we must have the midnight test
If we would finally learn to run.

So, though it cost you everything
To wait and trust the coming light,
And darkness seems to hold the chains
Which keep your heart in dreaded night,

Remember Dawn has not yet spoken,
The light which long was held at bay,
But when he speaks the dark is broken
And light reveals a brand new day.
