When I took the cross upon me, it didn't seem so hard to bear
It didn't seem so inconvenient; it caused no worry or despair

But the cross grew far too heavy as I traveled down the road
Became a hassle and a bother, a cumbersome and bulky load

Pretty soon I found it easy just to lay the cross aside
Lean it up against the doorway, instead of dragging it inside

I'd force it in the car each morning, and leave it in the parking lot
And in the hustle of my day, not give the cross a second thought

But in the long, dark hour of midnight-when my heart began to race
How I needed God, my father, but I feared His angry face

I was ashamed of my behavior, how I longed to make things right
Then I realized I'd forgotten where I left the cross that night

For the only way to God is through His one and only son
The man who took my sins upon Him, and on the cross, salvation won

But how could I attempt to reach Him? I felt my cause a total loss
Until I stumbled on my pride and fell down on the rugged cross

I wrapped my trembling arms around it, kneeling there on bended knee
Sobbing openly, repentant, of the sin revealed in me

In an instant, came His comfort; a tender voice spoke soft and low
"That cross was carried on my body-my back is stronger than you know

Devote your time to me, your Savior, don't lean my cross upon the wall
And when it gets too hard to carry, all you have to do is call."
