Richard Baxter (1615-91)

He was a great preacher and writer that lived in England.
At one time he became pastor of a church in a very different town.
For three years he preached passionately with little or no response.
One day in desperation he through himself down on his floor of his study and cried out to God saying
“ Lord why don’t you do something with these people?
I can’t go on. If you don’t do something I will die! “
At that moment, Baxter said it was as if he heard a voice speaking back to him.

“Baxter, you’re working in the wrong place.
Your expecting revival to come through the church.
Try the home!”

This caused Baxter to change his whole approach.
He began to visit the homes of his members one by one.
He would spend whole evenings with them encouraging them to have personal and family devotions and showing parents how to set up a time of family worship with their children.
Gradually the spirit of God began to light the fires of renewal in the homes across his parish. It was not long before the fires swept the whole church and revival came.
And the rest is history…..
