How Do You Keep Your Promises?

How have you managed the promises you've made all through your life? Have you been like a fountain, spouting promises at the drop of a hat or are they few and far between. I have noticed a tendency of people to make promises wholesale, and they could not remember them all if they wanted to. It is better to make fewer promises and carry through on them than to disappoint others with our flagrant wordage.

A golden thread of promises
Is woven through each life;
Unbroken it builds character,
But severed it means strife.

There was a time so long ago
When oaths were kept and treasured;
It was a fitting yardstick then
Of how a man was measured.

Have you ever thought of your promises in this manner, as one continuous thread instead of as unrelated incidents in your life? How many times has that thread been broken by unkept promises? This concept is especially needful for children or they will grow up trusting no one's word. The idea is to think about the consequences of your words before you speak them. How will you be viewed as a person if you don't keep what you say? Do you care? It is not always possible to keep one's word, but it should be an exception and not a rule when you renig. Don't let it become a habit to do this because it is very easy to let promise-making and promise-keeping degrade into just words that don't mean anything.

Ask yourself if you really mean what you are saying or are you just trying to fill up space in the conversation? A person's word was one of the most important measures of how a person was judged. If they had a lot of money, in the early years of our country, it was not as important as if they kept their word. Now the opposite is true. How do you want your word to be remembered when you are no longer here? It is not too late to make the changes that are necessary. You can do it!
