There is a popular Christian song out that talks about how Christ would do anything just to be with us. Starting from the perspective of Jesus, the song talks about how he has heard the saying that a man would climb mountains and swim oceans just to be able to be near those he loves. Jesus goes on to say that those are nothing but empty dreams. Of himself, man does not have that kind of dedication. In the song Jesus says that he hasn’t ever climbed a high mountain or swam an ocean, but that he has carried the cross to Calvary, and walked upon the raging sea to be with us, and his love and dedication are real. He says that there is no price that he would not pay, that He would do anything just to be with us.
This song is absolutely right on the money! Jesus has paid the highest price, His life, to be with us. Sometimes in our humanness we think that we understand this, but we underestimate the price that Christ paid and I think we also fail to grasp all that that price encompasses. Christ didn’t die for us just so that he might be with us after we die and go to heaven. He died and rose again that He might be with us in the here and now. The gospel is about so much more than going to heaven, being with God, and being made righteous once we get there. It is about becoming who we were supposed to be, relating to God, and reflecting His image. God’s kingdom is here, now. We have not seen the fullest revelation of it, but it is here. Christ gave His life in order that He might have a deep, intimate relationship with us right now. On earth. He wants to change our lives right now. On earth. Jesus longs to be with you and me today!
Truth be told, as I look at my life, I cannot help but notice how little I truly am in the presence of Jesus. I am willing to think that if you were to make an honest assessment of your own lives, that this would hold true for you as well. We carry on with our lives, our jobs, our family duties, our entertainment, our hobbies, and even our ministries, rushing from one thing to the next as if to fabricate meaning for our lives. When all the while we miss the real meaning, Christ, who is standing in the background. He is beckoning to us through nature, through other people, through his word, through the church and through our circumstances. He has paid everything to be with us, and we can’t even give Him the time of day. Even as you read this you might be looking at your watch and thinking that you have other things to do, or wishing that I would hurry up and get to my conclusion so that you can go on to do whatever it is you have to do. We substitute being busy for being with Christ.
Jesus Christ has done everything to be with us; is it too much for Him to ask us to take some time to be with Him? I am aware that this is Easter weekend and so many of us have so much going on, but if we celebrate Easter with luster and pomp, yet miss the Christ behind the cross, we will miss a diamond amongst fools gold. Let’s take the time to seek Him today!
