The ‘sleeping’ Savior

The disciples were suffering through a serious squall and their boat nearly got swamped. Where was the savior? He was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. He was in the boat, in the storm.

Sleeping!

We know that He eventually calmed the storm, but that happened later.

Isn't this what we often experience when we are in the midst of a deep crisis? Sometimes we desperately call out to him, just to be swallowed by silence. Let's admit that he doesn't always calm the storm as soon us we want him to. Sometimes we need to wait for the storm to blow over and we have to deal with all the debris afterwards. We might experience him as being asleep when we are going through a major crisis.

He might have been sleeping, but he was still in the storm, with his disciples the boat! We might not know it, we might not experience it, but he is with us, in the eye of the storm. He is with us: in the boat.

He will take us through it. We might get ship wrecked like Paul. We might swallow lots of salt water. We might get seriously injured. He will be with us, regardless of what happens.

If we can just continue to surrender our struggles and ourselves to him, we will see him in our brokenness. We will see him as the only sufficient answer to our deepest pain.

When our Savoir seems most absent, He's often busy accomplish his purposes in us.
