"Go-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o, Girgs!"
Battle cheerleaders Buffy and Zizzonex whooped their final "Rah Rah's!" for this pep rally and sat down, breathing hard.
Their fake smiles soon faded, and the reality of the situation set in, once again.
"Why do we even bother?" whined Buffy. "We never, ever win against the Israelites, EVER! We sometimes beat the Perizzites and Hivites; it's usually a close war against the Amorites, but them? It's useless!" Her sagging posture and protruding lower lip were not very perky--not very cheerleader-like at all, in fact.
"I know, I know. I feel the same way." Zizzonex commiserated with Buffy, as all good pals do. "Didn't we say, way back at the beginning of the battle season, that we knew it would be this way? That we knew we'd have to settle for second place at best? Hey--second's not bad! And, whatever happens, we definitely have to beat the Canaanites, after they embarrassed us so-o-o badly last year. To do that, our guys need our support. Come on, Buffy, up and at 'em!"
But Buffy wasn't in a very energetic mood, so they just sat, and watched, and cried.
Buffy and Zizzo weren't the only Girgashites disheartened by the constant losses to the Israelites. No matter how many men plunged into the battle, no matter what the odds, no matter what "great new, can't miss strategy" was employed each time, the good ol' Girgs never won against Israel, ever.
Back home in Girgland, some of the elderly folk recalled a time when Israel didn't always win. They claimed that it all had to do with the God of the Israelites. As the legend went, if the "Children of Israel" were faithfully and humbly following their God, and serving Him only, they were assured of victory in every battle, because He would go before them. If, however, they began serving other gods, He would remove His favor, and they could indeed be defeated--quite handily, with heavy casualties.
Similar talk abounded among the other "-ite Peoples," and they wondered when God would stop playing favorites, supporting Israel only, and turn the tide their way. Many of them had the same idea: "Some day, Israel will stumble, we just know it! They just have to be tempted away from serving their God wholeheartedly... But, how likely is that? Who would do such a foolish thing?"
Through the centuries, if an outside observer were to review Israel's history, he would see that they did just that, over and over again. Yes, it was a foolish thing.
But, before you go rolling your eyes and thinking "Tisk, tisk..."
Alas, don't we Christians do the same thing today? We know that God is with us, and will mightily go before us into every battle, if only we remain faithful to Him. Nevertheless, we foolishly let ourselves be tempted by other pursuits and the things of this life, and we suffer the consequences of sin. It's enough to depress even a cheerleader!
Don't be a Girg, serve God alone!
For your sin, you must atone!
He'll help in the temptation zone!
Don't be a Girg, serve God alone!
Go-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o, Team!
