My Heart Breaks for Terri Schindler-Schiavo


As an American and a parent myself, I cannot help but be ashamed and appalled about the Terri Schiavo case. How and when did it come about that we have decided to play God and decide who has the right to live and who must die? How has it come about that we Americans hide in our little closets, talking about what a shame it is, yet, not uniting together and standing up against such an atrocity?

My heart breaks for Terri and her parents. If she was a murderer, she would be constitutionally protected against such a horrible death as being a cruel and unusual punishment. If she was an animal, her owners would be sentenced to jail. However, as it is, she is a helpless victim, one unable to stand and defend herself. Evidently, when one becomes helpless, unable to speak for or defend them selves, they no longer have any rights in the United States.

Her parents obviously love their daughter and have her best interest in heart, while her so-called husband has neither. His interests lay with the woman he has been living with for the past several years and the children they have together. Yet, the Court has taken the right of the parents away and given them to this man.

Why is it that we Christians in the United States are not standing up, making our voices heard? It is sad how we have allowed the other side to take control of our lives because we are not united, because we slink away with our tails tucked between our legs, because we don’t want to become involved, or because we leave it up to the other person to take action. Our country is headed in a fast downhill slide and we do nothing but moan and groan about the injustices.

If Terri is starved to death, who’s to say that the next step won’t graduate to our elderly, our handicapped, and the so-called non-productive citizens of the United States. What if it was our child, our parent or one of us?

Yes, again, I say, my heart breaks for Terri and her family. And my heart breaks for us Americans because we are allowing this to happen.
