The Gospels
John 1:1-41 - The Essence of God

Key Verses:
(NRSV)
  • 1-2: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God." - The Christ - the essence of God - with God, in God and through God for all time.

  • 4-5: "What has come into being 4in Him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not over come it." - We are created in the Light and with this light darkness will not prevail.

  • 10: "He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him; yet the world did not know Him." - The Spirit of God, the Christ, has always been in the world however, it took Jesus, the Son of God, to reveal His glory.

  • 12: "But to all who received Him, who believed in His name, He gave power to become children of God who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God." - Reborn in Christ to become children of God.

  • 16-17: "From His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." - Forgiveness and the love of God pours into our lives, time after time after time; unceasingly and forever.

  • 29: "The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, 'Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!'" - John the Baptist, a voice in the wilderness, reveals the nature of Jesus, the sacrificial lamb for us all.

  • 35-37: "The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, 'Look, here is the Lamb of God!" 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus." - Once Christ is revealed in our lives we will follow.
Points to Contemplate:
  • Is the Word in you? How does that make you feel? When you consider that the Creator of all things, the Spirit and essence of God from the beginning of all time, resides and lives within you, what are your thoughts? Are you humbled? Does it make you feel especially loved? Do you feel connected? Are you in awe of God's greatness? Is it not an amazing thought that Christ would choose to take up residence in your heart?

  • Are you a child of God? Do you have His genetic imprint? Are you destined to be like Him as you grow? Will you have His smile in your eyes; His love for the world; His patience and joy? As His child are you filled with hope and more willing to step out in faith? Are you more accepting of His other children? As you consider your kinship, does it become easier to love one another as your self because you have come to realize that they are yourself in God?

  • Have you accepted the Grace of Christ? Do you fully comprehend what Jesus has done for you as He paid for your sins with His life? Each day as you walk through darkness, can you see the wounds of sin you inflict on Jesus as He hangs on the altar of death? As His grace upon grace flows into your life, are you moving closer to being the image of Christ yourself? Are you willing to be a disciple, dropping everything in your life to follow Christ wherever He leads?
Promises of the Gospel:

The essence of God living in our hearts - can anything be more amazing than this?
