#29 in “Blessing for Senior Saints” series.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son.”  Romans 8:28-29 KJV.

Romans 8:28 KJV is often glibly quoted by Christians.  Something has gone wrong, so we quote this verse to ourselves or to others. This promise is not for everyone.  It is given to those who love God, have been foreknown by God, called, predestined, justified, and glorified.  All of these characteristics are given in the immediate context of this promise (v. 28-30).

We love God because he first loved us. We are called for His purpose, not ours.  His purpose is to conform us to His image.  Our current trial is to help us reflect His character.  We want God to remove our trial, or make it easy, or help us get something we want. That may not be God’s plan for us at all.  Joseph spent13 years in prison. Job lost his possessions, his family, and his health. Paul had a thorn in the flesh which God did not heal. All of this happened while God worked His purpose in their lives. 

Even in old age, God is still working His purpose in our lives, conforming us to His image.  Are you willing to go through the fire of old age trials so that you can be conformed to His image? God is not finished conforming you until He takes you home to heaven.
