The purpose of the post salvation spiritual life, as it pertains to the individual, is NOT to work towards obtaining or retaining the unearned, irrevocable (Rom. 11: 29) gift of eternal life that he or she has ALREADY received (John 5: 24).

The individual post salvation spiritual life, here on earth, of a born-again believer BEGINS the moment he or she is born-again. It ENDS when he or she departs this world and enters eternity future.

ALL born-again believers are called to make Biblical discipleship the “guiding light” of their post salvation spiritual life. Trying to identify and to execute one’s post salvation spiritual life without THIS guiding light, is like trying to drive a car at night without headlights on down a narrow, winding, mountain road without street lights, in heavy rain and wind.

Trying to move along the road to spiritual maturity by using human effort is like trying to drive a car that is out of gas (John 15:5). One might try to do so via human effort, by getting out and trying to push, but will not get very far, as this road is a steep, uphill climb.

Biblical discipleship calls for the learning (2Pet. 3: 18) and applying (James 1: 22) the applicable principles of Bible Doctrine to ALL that one thinks, says, and does. Biblical discipleship is initially for the edification and spiritual growth of the newly born-again believer, but with the long-term objective of participating in the Great Commission, evangelizing and edifying OTHERS!

This is the purpose of the post salvation spiritual life.

In order to be motivated to execute the type of post salvation spiritual life that glorifies God, one must be in fellowship with Him, having established a 24/7 intimate walk, in conscious awareness of His presence, and the willingness to execute His agenda.

Fellowship with God can be likened to a harmonious marriage. When married couples are having conflicts, they remain married, but there is a hostility present, accompanied by having no desire to go out of their way to please each other, until whatever caused the conflict is resolved.

Likewise, born-again believers out of fellowship with God remain saved, but until whatever sin that caused the breach in their fellowship is resolved, there is the loss of intimacy. Blessings can turn to discipline Heb.12: 6. Faith is reduced, fear is increased. Confidence is replaced with feelings of insecurity.

As an advancing disciple, the most serious result of post salvation sin is the loss of the “filling” of the Spirit, reducing or eliminating his or her usefulness in promoting the Great Commission.

One cannot be submitted to the control of his or her fallen nature (Rom. 7) and be submitted to the leading (filling) of God the Holy Spirit at the same time.

“Do not be drunk with wine (or mind-altering substances), in which there is debauchery (reckless indulgence in bodily pleasure), but instead be filled (controlled) by the Spirit (Eph. 5: 18 NASB2020 parentheses mine).”

“…walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh (fallen nature)-Gal. 5: 16 NASB2020 parenthesis mine.”

When we do sin, by carrying out the desires of the flesh, we must confess the sin, which among other things, puts us back in fellowship with God.

The amount of time we spend out of fellowship with God can be as brief as the time it takes to confess the sin, or for as long as the rest of one’s post salvation spiritual life, here on Earth. The accumulated time spent in or out of fellowship with God determines the quality of one’s post salvation spiritual life.

All born-again believers are permanently indwelled by God the Holy Spirit (1Cor. 3: 16), but are not always filled with (under the control of) God the Holy Spirit. These two opposing natures are at constant and ongoing war with each other, desiring to be the one in control of our thoughts and accompanying actions.

To whichever one we choose to submit to at any given time, determines our overt behaviors and actions.
