#28 in “Blessing for Senior Saints”

“If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.  Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” Psalm 139:11-12 KJV.

As a little boy growing up on a small farm in North Wisconsin, there were no street lights,  nor neighbors close enough to see the lights shine from their home.   My dad had a rule that if we carried toys or small furniture into the yard, it was our duty to bring them back into the house before dark.  One time I forgot, and Dad discovered my neglect.  He made me go out in the yard in the dark (no porch light) and retrieve the forgotten toys.  I cried and wailed, but I still had to go.   The dark frightened me.

Now, I am at the other end of the age spectrum (in my eighties). I am afraid of what I can’t see in the dark – things that I could trip or stumble over.  And, at this period of life, a fall is much more serious than when I was a little boy.

Other things make us fall – sometimes even in the daytime: a crumpled rug, a kitchen tool we dropped, or a slip in the shower, or a financial misstep.

As we age, simple things can become extremely difficult.

But God is always here for us, shining the light of His Word and His Presence into our lives.  He didn’t  promise to spare us from the difficulties of old age. But He is with us every step of our way to comfort and guide us with His grace and mercy.  Trust Him.
