Stop, Look & Listen by Naoma Barber Bird

“H. A. Daake of Rochester, a telephone maintainer from 1925- 1939, better known as a safety enthusiast, was appointed supervisor of safety for the Erie Railroad in 1939.” During this time, he expanded the phrase, “Stop, Look, and Listen.” He studied how to apply his work on safety to railroads, schools, roads, and workplaces. However, long before Mr. Draake developed the Stop, Look, and Listen theme, it was, and still is, the theme throughout Scripture as a safeguard.

Stop, Look, and Listen isn’t just a phrase for railroads, roads, and crosswalks, but a principle found in Scripture from long ago. This principle is still essential today to apply in our work, our family, and our lives in general as we walk by faith in Jesus’ name. Throughout Scripture, we are told to stop and listen, because this is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Jeremiah 6:16 NIV) and “for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,” (Proverbs 1:1-3)

We can only do this if we are willing to slow down and keep our focus on what we see, sense, and hear throughout the day, applying it to our lives as God directs and supports us.

"Our modern GPS can fail, but the Lord's direction is always dependable." By remaining in fellowship with God, we must take the time to stop, look to examine whether we are in the place God wants us to be or wants us to go, and listen for his voice through prayer and reading His Word.
As we learn from him and follow his commands and prompts, staying in constant communication with him, He promises He will “Make level paths for your feet”! (Hebrews 12:13NIV
