This topic came to me during my devotion time while visiting one of my dearest and most valued friends in West Yorkshire. I was reflecting on a deep conversation we were having, identifying the causes of our past ill-health and her ongoing recovery.

As an advocate of emotional well-being and realising that my past illness stemmed from emotional dysregulation, I wanted to know whether emotional ill-health also played a pivotal part in her autoimmune condition.

She suffered physical and emotional abuse as a child and teenager, and these experiences remained in her subconscious. She spent her career working at the ground level in Children's Social Services, although she qualified at a managerial level, giving children the opportunity she never had. The emotional pain, unworthiness, and need for approval never left her. After her diagnosis, the sudden isolation left her feeling cut off from a community known for its warmth and togetherness. To top it all off, her body forced her to retire early. Without her work, a constant sense of loneliness and irrelevance settled in, causing her health to spiral even further down.

How do you recover from that?

My mind took me back to my diagnosis. Although I am still recovering from the emotional toll of the treatment, I recovered physically faster than most, even though I did not complete the full treatment plan for the diagnosis. How did that happen? 'The Health Condition of Your Spirit and Soul Heals or Harms Your Body.' As a pious woman, I held onto Psalm 91:16. It first came to mind as I waited for my biopsy (Spirit condition). I repeated it continually as the physical suffering from the treatment after my operation felt like death knocking at my door, believing it would restore my body to full health (Soul condition). Over time, I felt and saw the healthy changes in my body (Healing begins) as it repaired itself.

Science and spirituality agree: your body listens to your inner self. When your mind, emotions, and spirit are stressed, or at peace, your physical health responds directly to that environment.

Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

Plato puts it this way: "The cure of the part should not be attempted without treatment of the whole. No attempt should be made to cure the body without the soul."

While science examines the mind-body connection through fields such as psychosomatics and psychoneuroimmunology, these areas perfectly mirror the ancient truth of a soul-body connection—proving that our inner thoughts, feelings, and beliefs directly shape our immune system. Ultimately, modern medicine is only beginning to prove what spiritual wisdom has always known: "The Health Condition of Your Spirit and Soul Heals or Harms Your Body." JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association).

How it harms: When you are taught to view a spiritual connection as a ritual rather than a relationship (Isaiah 29:13) and your soul (mind, emotions and will) is depleted by constant stress, anger, depression and anxiety, your body remains in a fight-or-flight state. This floods your system with cortisol, a stress hormone. Over time, high cortisol can cause high blood pressure, weaken your immune system and increase inflammation.

How it heals: When you have a spiritual connection, a relationship with God that combines prayer, meditation, scripture, and the indwelling of Holy Spirit, you develop a strong sense of gratitude, whatever your issues may be (Psalm 145:18 and Jeremiah 29:13). You activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

This system acts as a built-in brake that calms the body, eases the heart, supports digestion, and recharges your batteries once a stressful moment passes. In essence, it helps your body repair itself. It is the opposite of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), which is also called the gas pedal.

The Body — A Whole Ecosystem: Our physical body can only function normally when it exists in perfect alignment with our spirit and soul. If any one of these three systems falls out of balance, a disconnect occurs—rippling through our health and opening the door to illness.

Supporting any way you can: Everyone who has experienced physical or emotional illness recovers differently. One size does not fit all, and so no single healing method suits everyone. When belief systems and cultures differ, your spiritual healing method may feel alien to others, and they may not appreciate you mentioning it.

 So, what can you do?

My way of supporting someone through their healing process is to listen, even if you have heard the story many times. Still be that friend who shows up so they feel heard. Never appear to be advising them; if you know something will work, present it as a suggestion rather than expecting them to commit.

You can share what helped you recover and heal physically, and, of course, share your spiritual experience without assuming they will accept or appreciate your disclosure. Do you use the scriptures? Absolutely. They may not have Faith, or their Faith may differ from yours; still, be true to yourself. If you shy away from what healed your body and strengthened your spirit, your story loses its power. Share it honestly and let them take what they need from it.

Therefore, because the condition of your spirit and soul matters profoundly to the health of your body, we must feed our inner life with spiritual food that nourishes the soul. This opens the doorway to healing, clarity, and physical renewal. As Proverbs 3:7-8 reminds us, when we honour the Lord with our inner life, 'This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones."
