Let my prayer come before You; Incline Your ear to my cry. Psalm 88:2 NKJV

“Well, hello! So how are you?”

Passing through our church lobby as I left the worship service, I heard the familiar voice and I turned to see the speaker was a dear elderly friend. I greeted him warmly as we stepped aside to avoid the departing crowds, and I began to concentrate on what he was saying. However, I did so not only because I was interested but because my friend was hard of hearing; I knew he wore hearing aids – that didn’t always work well.

So as we chatted, I tried to concentrate then reply slowly and distinctly so I could hear him above the clamor of the crowded lobby.  Then I noticed something interesting. As I spoke, my friend leaned forward, his head tilted. It was as if he had “inclined his ear” toward me, concentrating and focusing on what I was saying. It was if he wanted to be sure he heard and understood me.

And actually it was an interesting picture of how God does the same – as he “inclines his ear” to “hear” us when we “cry” to him and we want to know that he’s listening. Perhaps we’re struggling with a difficult challenge. Or maybe we’re confused about details of his plan for us. Yet no matter what it is, like the Psalmist, we want God’s attention and are assured he hears us.

And always responds – perfectly.
