My wife and I are enjoying our “Sunset” years. As we are both in our mid-eighties, we are very conscious of God’s extraordinary grace to us – for salvation, for opportunities to serve,  and for our level of health and longevity. Although we are hoping and praying for that Blessed Hope – the Rapture, at the same time, we are preparing in the event of our deaths before the Rapture. We inevitably become well acquainted with our primary care doctor, our cardiologist, pulmonologist, urologist, podiatrist, and our lawyer. We have prepared legal documents with DNRs, wills, medical power of attorney, and durable power of attorney. Really exciting stuff!!??

 But most of all, we are thankful that early in life we both trusted Christ as Savior, making sure of our eternal destiny. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 KJV). And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” (John 10:28-29 KJV)

We are also grateful that God has allowed us to serve Him for these many years. Paul expressed it this way. “Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;  And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: (Ephesians 3:7-9). While our ministry and outreach would never come near the outreach and effectiveness of Paul’s ministry, we are thankful for the ministries God has given us.

As we look forward to heaven, we rejoice in the delightful gospel song titled

”When We All Get to Heaven.”

1 Sing the wondrous love of Jesus,

Sing His mercy and His grace,

In the mansions bright and blessed

He’ll prepare for us a place.        (John 14:2)

When we all get to heaven,
what a day of rejoicing that will be!
When we all see Jesus,                                 Revelation 4:11; 5:9;19:7-9)
we’ll sing and shout the victory!

2 While we walk the pilgrim pathway

The writer of this song, Eliza Hewitt, was born in 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school and the Girls’ Normal School, she became a public school teacher. While supervising students on the playground, she suffered a severe back injury, forcing her to spend several months in bed and to endure pain the rest of her life. 

The Lord ministered to her while recovering. She chose not to be resentful. She studied Literature and English, which God was going to use significantly in the years ahead. 

Some years later, being able to get around slowly, she attended a summer Methodist Camp meeting in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. There she met and became friends with a pastor’s wife, Emily D. Wilson. Together, they created this hymn, When We All Get to Heaven.” No doubt that her suffering made her long for heaven. The song was a testimony of her yearning for her Savior and for heaven. She went on to write many more hymns, most of which were intended for children in Sunday School.  

Among her best-known songs are “When We All Get to Heaven,” “Sunshine in My Soul,” and “More About Jesus Would I Know.”

Eliza was deeply interested in children and ministering to them through Sunday school. She superintended a Sunday School for the Northern Home for Friendless Children and then later the same type of ministry for Calvin Presbyterian Church.

Eliza died in 1920.

“When We All Get to Heaven”  is a favorite song of ours that is often on our minds, hearts, and voices. What a day that will be when we see Jesus, and we will sing and shout the victory.
