When we have a faithful friend, we are blessed. For they usually stick with us during good times and bad; encouraging us and being caringly honest with us too as needed.

That’s also how it is with our Lord Jesus Christ, only better, when we have a spiritual relationship with Him. For scripture tells us how He sticks closer to us than a brother (Proverbs 18:24b).  When we accept Him as our Savior-Redeemer, our spiritual feet become stabilized on the solid rock of His life and what He teaches us and continues to show us through His Word and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus explained how we come alive spiritually to Nicodemus, in a way that we can understand. Jesus told him that just like we need to experience physical birth to live, we also need to be born again, but this time, to be born of God who is spirit, in order to have spiritual life. He called it, “The second birth”.

This second birth gives us a relationship with God and His Son like no other … if we faithfully follow Him and put what he taught us into practice. Jesus gives us an amazing word picture of what can happen: no more shaky ground, when we’re standing on the solid Word of Christ!

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house (his life) on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24,26-27 NIV
