The Certain Place: From Jacob’s Ladder to the Exaltation of Mankind in Christ
Scripture traces a clear trajectory for mankind’s position before God: created in the image and likeness of God with dominion over the earth, diminished by the Fall, and then restored and elevated through Jesus Christ, the last Adam. Within that trajectory the recurring phrase “a certain place” carries special weight. Its first appearance in the King James Version occurs at the very moment heaven’s gate is opened to a man on earth, and its later use in Hebrews deliberately recalls that moment while announcing the final destiny of redeemed mankind—above the angels in the world to come.

The Original Position of Mankind
Genesis 1:26-28 records God’s purpose: mankind was made in His image and likeness and given dominion over the works of His hands. Adam stood as God’s representative on earth—subordinate to the Creator, yet elevated above the rest of creation. He exercised that authority by naming the animals and by dressing and keeping the garden. Psalm 8 celebrates the same dignity: man is crowned with glory and honour and set over all things. This was the first Adam’s original estate.

The Fracture of the Fall
Sin interrupted the full exercise of that dominion. Death entered, the ground was cursed, and creation itself was subjected to futility (Genesis 3:17-19; Romans 5:12; 8:20-22). Although the principle of being crowned remained, the reality became diminished. Hebrews 2:8 acknowledges the present condition: “we see not yet all things put under him.” Mankind lives “a little lower than the angels,” the image marred and the authority impaired.

The Certain Place at Heaven’s Gate
The first occurrence of the phrase “certain place” appears in Genesis 28:11. Jacob, fleeing from Esau, “lighted upon a certain place” and slept. In that place he saw a ladder set up on the earth, its top reaching to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending upon it. When he awoke he declared:

11   And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12   And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
The certain place is therefore identified, by the inspired narrative itself, as the court at heaven’s gate—the meeting point of earth and the heavenly realm, where angelic traffic moves between the two spheres. Here the question of man’s relation to the angels and to the presence of God is already in view.

Hebrews and the Testimony of the Certain Place
Centuries later the writer of Hebrews introduces the quotation of Psalm 8 with the identical phrase:

Hebrews 2:5-6
5   For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.
6   But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? 

The deliberate echo is striking. The “certain place” that first marked the gate of heaven now becomes the literary doorway through which Scripture itself testifies about mankind. The world to come is not subjected to angels; it is subjected to man. The question once framed at Bethel—“What is man?”—is answered in the person of the true Son of Man.

The Last Adam and the Restoration of Position
Hebrews 2 proceeds to apply Psalm 8 to Jesus. He was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, yet is now crowned with glory and honour, with all things put under His feet. Where the first Adam’s disobedience brought sin and death, the last Adam’s obedience brings righteousness and life (1 Corinthians 15:45-47; Romans 5:12, 19). Christ recovers and perfects the dominion that was lost.

Believers Seated Above the Angels
United to the last Adam, believers share His exaltation. They are raised with Him and seated with Him in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). They are joint-heirs with Christ and will reign with Him (Romans 8:17; Revelation 5:10; 2 Timothy 2:12). They will even judge angels (1 Corinthians 6:3). The angels themselves remain “ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation” (Hebrews 1:14). Thus the original image-bearing and dominion are not merely restored but elevated: in Christ the body of redeemed mankind occupies a place of glory and authority that surpasses that of the angels.

Conclusion
The “certain place” of Genesis 28 is the court at heaven’s gate, where Jacob first beheld the ladder connecting earth to the presence of God. When the writer of Hebrews returns to that same phrase, he is not merely citing a psalm; he is summoning the entire biblical testimony about mankind’s destiny. The Fall left mankind lower than the angels and unable to fulfil the original calling. In Jesus, the last Adam, that calling is recovered and surpassed. The gate of heaven opened momentarily at Bethel stands open permanently in Christ, and those who are in Him are brought into a position higher than the angels in the world to come. This is the trajectory of Scripture: from the first Adam’s dominion, through the diminished estate of the Fall, to the exalted place of the redeemed in the last Adam—secured at the certain place that is the gate of heaven, by the precious blood of Jesus!
