The Power and the Ability

And he [Jehoshaphat] said, “Lord, God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? And are You not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You.”  2 Chronicles 20:6 (NASB)

The tourist hesitantly approached the farmer - wary because he’d been told that the man was supposed to be somewhat illogical. “Hey, I got a question.” He asked. “I was here last summer and you had two windmills here on your farm. Now there’s only one. Can you tell me what happened?”

The farmer paused and nodded as he spoke with assurance. “Well, I had to take one out. There was only enough wind for one.”

Illogical of course but while that farmer may have thought he lacked power from the wind, we know that when it comes to God’s power and his ability to use it for us there’s never any lack.

We get a reassuring reminder of this in our passage where the speaker declares the extent of the Lord’s phenomenal authority and control [AA1] and its invincibility.

Also, one way we can experience a particularly comforting evidence of God’s power comes when we realize how he provides that power to assist us with a newly assigned task on our spiritual journey. That’s because the wonderfully reassuring fact is that no matter what he asks us to do he will indeed provide us not only with the power but also the ability to do it. Yet no matter what it is, we know he’ll be sure to furnish us with whatever we need to not only begin but also complete the job.

As our passage says, “Power and might are in your hand…”
