Senior Saints, New Mountains to Climb

#18 in “Blessing for Senior Saints” series

 “I am this day fourscore and five years old.”   ”Now therefore give me this mountain.” (Joshua 14:10, 12 KJV).

 “Are we there yet?”, the kids asked. And we answered, ”No, it will be a while yet.” Sometimes we, senior adults, ask God that question.  “Can’t we just sit down and let the younger folks do the work? We are retired, you know.”  You do know that retirement is not mentioned in the Bible, right? 

 Yes, as senior saints, we do have to acknowledge that “we ain’t what we used to be.” This old body doesn’t perform nearly as well as when I was 20, or 40, or even 60 years old. But there are a lot of things we can, and should, do at our age. We don’t just quit and rock our rocking chair.

 Caleb had stood with Joshua when the 12 spies returned from Canaan with their report. They said, “We can conquer.” (Numbers 14). The other 10 said we can’t.  Those 10 and all other Israelites over age 20 died in the wilderness. Now, 45 years later, Caleb and Joshua had led the younger folks to victory in Canaan. But Caleb wasn’t ready to retire and rest on his laurels. “Give me this mountain.” He wanted to win everything God had already promised.

 Whatever your capabilities or handicaps are, God knows. If He leads you to do something, He will enable you with the physical, mental, emotional, and financial strength to carry out His will. (Be sure it is God’s leading, not just your own idea.)  Read and study carefully, Philippians 4:13-19 and 1 Thessalonians 5:24. Then trust God’s promises and get into action.
