“Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 18:3 NKJV

I can remember the cool squish of mud between my toes on rainy summer days or making “grass salad” with my sister in our play kitchen. Our time was spent, for most of our earlier years, deep in make-believe, contriving elaborate scenarios apparent only to us or discussing funny pranks we could pull on our other sister. There was hide-and-seek in our family’s woods, weekly bonfires with extended family, and even an occasional movie night treat. My childhood, like so many others, was far from perfect, but the quiet simplicity of day to day and the deep, restful sleep I enjoyed most nights are definitely a sharp contrast to the way much of life tends to feel now. The truth is, even throughout the most tragic of circumstances, I never worried about my basic needs being met. That was something my parents were responsible for. My job was to grow, give hugs, share my grass salad, and align myself with the rules of our home.

The above passage was always an intimidating one for me. It seemed to go against the natural maturation process, the end goal being independence and the ability to stand on my own two feet. However, an amazing process began the moment I said yes to His outstretched arms. A new understanding took shape, and my reality began to shift back to that of a dependent child. I am older, yes, and responsibilities abound, but the truth is, someone else is really in control. Much like that child, life tends to go more smoothly when I align myself with The One who is actually calling the shots. My physical and mental growth have equipped me with some amazing tools that I am blessed to be able to use throughout this journey, but the real challenge is allowing myself to sink back into that utter reliance, to submit myself to His sovereignty, knowing there is no one who cares more for my life or that of my loved ones than He. That is where real peace is found.

In this time of growing older, and hopefully more mature, we must always remember that we must receive as like a child what God offers us. Thanks for the share.
