Adam is a figure of Jesus.

Romans 5:14

Consider this: If Adam is a figure of Jesus, is it possible that the first Adam was three days and three nights in the earth before being raised to life, just as the last Adam was raised to eternal life, making salvation and eternal life possible for whosoever will come?

1 Corinthians 15:45
And so it is written, “The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

Concerning Adam, Romans 5:14 states, “…who is the figure of him that was to come.” Adam, in many ways, is a figure or picture of Jesus. I believe there is a powerful picture of the resurrection contained in the historical account of man’s creation.

Let us examine the process of man’s creation. According to Isaiah 43:7, it can be broken down into three steps:

Isaiah 43:7
Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

The creation of man appears to involve three process steps:

1.  The image of man is formed in the earth.

2.  The body is made of clay (dust and water).

3.  The soul is created and given life by the breath of the LORD God.

What better way to create Adam in God’s image and likeness? Metallurgists use the sand-casting process to produce an object using sand contained in a form and a pattern to make the mold impression. Once the mold is fashioned and prepared, molten metal is poured into the prepared mold, which eventually produces a finalized part. In Adam’s case, the form was made in the earth, God Himself was the pattern, and Adam was the clay (dust and water). Job 10:8–13 seems to verify this process.

“…I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.”

When did God start the process of creating Adam? Genesis 1:11 indicates that all seed was planted in the earth on Day 3. This includes anything that contains seed in itself—plants, fowl, animals, and man. This may seem like a stretch, but one must consider Genesis 8:22 and the law of seedtime and harvest as it relates to creation. This perspective may also help answer the age-old question of which came first, the chicken or the egg.

Based on Genesis 2:4—“in the day that the LORD God made the earth…”—which was Day 3, and considering Genesis 1:11 as the day all seed was planted in the earth (“…whose seed is in itself”), I believe it is reasonable to suggest that Genesis 2:7a began on Day 3, when God formed and fashioned man out of the dust. Then, after three days and three nights, Genesis 2:7b occurs when God breathed life into Adam on the sixth day. Clearly, this is the first picture of the resurrection in the Old Testament.

God declares and pictures Jesus, the last Adam, and His resurrection from the very beginning. See Isaiah 46:10 and Romans 5:14.

God shadowed Adam and breathed life into him on the sixth day.

I consider 2 Kings 4:34 as an example that illustrates the method God used to raise Adam up as a living soul. Just as Elisha raised the Shunammite’s son from the dead: “And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.”

God created us in a very loving and personal way. Great is His love for each of us. He created us to be His family. We are created to be His children!

God’s word is alive, full of treasures waiting to be discovered—believe it or not.
