BREAKING POINT

Do you know it is possible for good, solid believers to be tested to a breaking point? I did not realize that until I found myself in that exact place.

In August 2002, I found out I was going to have a baby! This would be my third. My first two pregnancies were a little tough, morning sickness from 7 to 9 months. I knew within a few weeks I would begin that awful journey again! Unfortunately, this time the hyper emesis was extremely bad! I started losing a lot of weight, constantly dehydrated and vomiting so much and so hard that I would throw up blood- man did that hurt! I began having to go to the clinic to have IV fluids to help the dehydration still things continued to get worse. I was starting to make frequent stays in the hospital. This was bad! I couldn’t even take care of my other two children Shelby 7 and Ricky 5. My husband had to try to manage the farm, the house and the kids.

One day during a regular ultra-sound we found out that we were not having a baby-we were having TWINS! How in the world could that be? It was really quite amazing to see two little babies growing inside of me. They were lying so that they could touch hands.
Wow! They were just a few weeks along and they already had the desire to touch. Even though we now had this wonderful news of twins, I continued to be horribly sick. I finally hit the point where I wasn’t able to attend church with my family, I couldn’t read my Bible, all I really did was sleep and get sick. I would try to listen to some of my Christian CD’s, but sometimes that didn’t do anything either.

During my third stay in the hospital my doctor came to visit. She had been doing some reading when she came across an article discussing how pregnant women with bad gallbladders tend to have really bad hyper emesis. The next thing I knew I was having my gallbladder checked. The next day my doctor came in and said, “I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is your gallbladder is bad. The bad news is we may need to remove it.” Remove it? I’m pregnant with twins! We discussed other things we could do to sustain my body for the sake of these two babies. Then we talked with the surgeon as well. He was not comfortable with this idea of surgery with me being about 16 weeks or so along in my pregnancy, so it was decided that I would go on TPN. I was discharged from the hospital for a couple of days then I returned to have my TPN set up. I would only have to be in the hospital for a couple of days while all of the nutrients were regulated. During this time I continued to be sick and a couple of days was becoming more…I was exhausted! Everything hit me—I was physically, emotionally and spiritually depleted. I was nervous about my health, but even more so I was afraid that at some point I would have to choose one twin over the other. I called my husband, I was sobbing (which is very much not me) and told him I could not take any more—I told him that I wanted to end the pregnancy.
