Be an Aaron Be a Hur

“ . . . So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle. (Ex 17:11-13 NLT)

Jump into the scene with me. You’re on that hilltop, watching as the battle rages in the valley below. There’s Moses, standing on a hilltop, eyes fixed on heaven, praying — holding his staff high as he implores the Lord for Israel’s victory. Aaron and Hur are there too, standing to the side, watching as their leader pleads with God on Israel’s behalf. They’ve got one eye on Moses and the other on the field of battle. Suddenly, Aaron notices that when Moses gets tired and puts his hands and his head down, the Amalekites seem to surge. Then, when he’s rested a bit and resumes, the battle goes again in Israel’s favor. Seeing this “truth,” they sit Moses down and simply hold his hands up until the battle is finished. The result? Victory!

Notice that the warriors on the battlefield lived or died, completely dependent upon the prayer warriors at the top of the mountain. This so clearly demonstrates the power of prayer. It’s the lifeblood of every ministry. We all know that without prayer, every battle gets compromised. But we get tired. We get lonely. And we can put our hands and our heads down. Like Moses. But then there’s Aaron and Hur! They were just as important in this battle! They came alongside and made it possible for Moses to continue. 

You and I need to be Aaron and Hur to those around us who are contending for the Kingdom! Yes, we need to be prayer warriors too, but we also need to be a support to others who wage war on their knees! Who is the Moses in your life? Go find and support him!
