Leviticus specifies that Passover occurs on the fourteenth day of the first month, followed immediately by the seven days of unleavened bread beginning on the fifteenth. In Acts 12:3, Peter is arrested during the days of unleavened bread, indicating that the Passover sacrifice had already occurred. Herod then imprisons Peter, intending to bring him before the people “after Easter” (KJV). Translating the Greek term pascha as “Passover” here would imply waiting until the following year, which conflicts with the narrative’s urgency and timeline. The KJV’s choice of “Easter” thus highlights a distinct spring observance—interpreted as the Christian celebration of Christ’s resurrection—within the broader period of unleavened bread.

The Greek word pascha originally denoted the Jewish Passover but came to represent the Christian resurrection feast in early Church usage, particularly in languages where a separate term for Easter developed. In the more developed English of the seventeenth century, “Easter” (derived from earlier pagan associations but repurposed by Christians) precisely conveyed this resurrection-focused holy day. Modern translations favor “Passover” for literal consistency with pascha’s primary meaning, yet the KJV rendering is seen as more precise in capturing the post-resurrection Christian context and avoiding chronological inconsistency.

This interpretation frames Herod’s plan as a satanic effort to eclipse the Church’s foundational day of victory. Just as Satan failed to prevent Christ’s resurrection—despite the sealed tomb, guards, and stone—neither could he destroy the early Church on this early Easter. Herod slew James and sought to execute Peter publicly after Easter to curry favor with the Jews and symbolically bury the Gospel’s advance. Yet God intervened: an angel released Peter from chains, guards, and prison gates, leading him to freedom. Peter “arose” from imprisonment in a manner echoing Christ’s resurrection from the grave.

This pattern underscores the promise in Matthew 16:18: Christ builds His Church upon the rock of His identity and finished work, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Satan could neither hold Jesus in death nor extinguish the Church on Easter, the day of resurrection power. The early Church, advancing through the Gospel and fervent prayer, prevailed as the light of God’s Word continued to increase amid persecution.
