Here Jesus refers to more than just a physical death. He is speaking of an eternal death, being cast from the presence of God for eternity. Each of us must repent. If one does not repent of their evil nature they cannot be reborn to a spirit filled life, and unless you are reborn, you will not see the kingdom of God. We were born into sin and must turn away from a life enslaved to sin to be reborn. To do so we must turn our will and our life over to the care of Jesus Christ. Without repentance there is no future to be spent in the presence of God.
