Step Out of the Shadows

“I couldn’t face you, Ari.” The fox looked down again. 

Gamzo, the fox, encountered Ari, for the first time as the small lion trekked through the strange forest. Gamzo played a cruel trick on Ari. Instead of the usual amusement gained by such actions, the sly fox experienced something extraordinary in the way Ari responded to his prank.

The small lion’s way of peace and speaking truth was something the fox had never known before. It caused him to look at life differently. The ways of his world now seemed wrong. Bewildered and changed, Gamzo longed to understand more. He stayed in the shadows, following Ari as the small lion continued his journey.

As Gamzo observed Ari from the shadows, he learned there was a new way to live. There was something luring him to be more than he was. Then, the challenge came for Gamzo to step out of the shadows into his destiny.

There is a place in the shadows where we sometimes dwell. We stay hidden there and peek out as we long to understand how to step into the light. We know in our hearts there is more to life, but fear holds us back. 

Gamzo overcame the fear. He pushed through his selfishness and doubts, stepping out of the shadows into action that saved Shirarina, who was traveling with Ari, from a terrible fate. The tiny bird would have perished had the fox not been there to help her. Gamzo found he was now in the open and exposed. It was quite uncomfortable, but exhilarating at the same time.

“In our last meeting, Gamzo, I told you I could not trust you. That has changed now. You have shown much courage today and proven to be trustworthy.” Gamzo stared at Ari and blinked back tears.

For the first time, Gamzo reached outside of himself and helped another creature. He stepped out of the shadows of fear. No longer would the vain amusements of his past life satisfy him. Gamzo now understood what was missing. He found there was a purpose to his life.

Is it time for you to step out of the shadows? Is it time to overcome the fear of failure, of being judged, or of feeling inadequate? Do you want to shine in the light or continue to hide in the shadows?

When we overcome our fears, we can help others, we can love, and we can respond in peace. Perhaps others who watch us from the shadows will also step out into the sun and find their purpose. Step out of the shadows of fear and you will step into a life full of meaning.
