The Crown of Glory for Senior Saints

“The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.” (Proverbs 16:31 KJV)

 Remember when your hair started turning gray – and then white?  Mine started while in my forties. I thought, “Oh No! I’m getting old already. I’m not ready for this yet.” But my dark brown hair disappeared, and white won the battle. 

 I found four “crowns of glory” in Scripture: one for the Lord of hosts (Isaiah 28:5), one for Israel (Isaiah 62:3), and one for elders or pastors of churches (1 Peter 5:4). The fourth crown of glory is for the hoary head – or the aged saint.  The “hoary head” (white or gray hair) is in itself a “crown of glory.”  But it has one qualification - if it be found in the way of righteousness.  The elderly saint (all born-again Christians are called saints in the Bible – Philippians 1:1) who has lived a godly life can display his hoary head as a symbol of honor. 

If you are an elderly person who is born-again and you have lived for the Lord through the years, this devotional and subsequent devotionals in this series for senior saints are for you. 

Gray hair is not only a symbol of age, but also of wisdom and honor.  It is used to describe the “Ancient of Days” in Daniel 7:9. Leviticus 19:32 taught, “Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.”  Living to old age was often a reward for someone who lived in obedience to the Scriptures. (Proverbs 3:1-2)

So, aging faithful Christian, wear your crown with thanksgiving and praise to the Lord!
