This column may find you just before the annual rush of Christmas specials and news stories about the need for Black Friday, Small-Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday. Or it may find you after such a parade of rabid ‘gimmie’ through the various holiday cartoons and specials—some of them dating back some 50 years.
One of the things I have noticed during the annual ‘commercial Santa sprint’ that comes after Thanksgiving is the following: While Santa has lots of goodies in his bag, there are things that he cannot bring to the average man, woman, boy or girl. I’m going to put forth my own ‘short list.’
Feel free to add your own items as they come to you.
Since Christmas is the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let me make it clear that Santa was not among the wise men. He did not bring Gold, Frankincense nor Myrrh to the stable for the Christ child (Matt. 2:11 KJV). Santa was nowhere to be seen on that night when the star came to point the way for the arrival of the Christ child, the child that was as old as his father, and younger than his mother.
Santa cannot bring anyone salvation. You know that main ingredient of faith coupled with belief in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9; 13 KJV). Santa cannot bring this item in his inventory as it will give any believing individual eternal life. Neither does he have joy, peace, wisdom, or love.
Further, while legend has it that Santa can tell whether you’ve been bad or good, he has nothing in his bag that will PERMANENTLY forgive your sins. Jesus Christ has that through his blood. Santa cannot shed any blood that will do mankind any good. Also, after being saved, a Christian—should they sin—have an advocate before God to forgive their sin, that being Jesus Christ the righteous (I John 1:8-10 KJV). It’s one thing to have a list of those who are bad or good; it’s another thing to have a means to get off that list through faith in Jesus Christ.
I could go on. However, when all is said and done, Jesus Christ has given mankind a most beautiful gift without the help of Santa. There is coming a day when every knee will bow before him—including Santa’s (Romans 14:11 KJV). Salvation is the gift that is steady 24-7/365, and does NOT need to be exchanged! Hope you have opened your eternal gift from Jesus! It’s already been paid for…and all he wants in return is your heart to serve him gladly.
