“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord, Your God, is with you, wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9 NKJV
For a few months after the birth of my youngest, little sleep and postpartum depression had locked me into a nightly cycle fueled by fear. My newborn would wake every two hours. I would soothe him back to sleep, then walk through our entire house checking doors, windows, and my two little girls, who were asleep upstairs. I would then attempt to fall back to sleep, only to repeat this entire scenario two hours later. I was trapped in a series of obsessive compulsions, unable to let go of fear and relax.
With my health and sanity beginning to deteriorate, I decided to attend a Bible study on spiritual warfare. I was given a list of verses to read through that would help me fight against the enemy’s tactics, as His Word is our most powerful weapon.
Later that evening, I began sifting through their list. I opened my Bible, and this verse seemed to jump right off the page. I not only read it, I also “heard” it in my mind, spoken in the voice of my dad. I was taken back to my childhood room, where he would remind me night after night that he was right there and I was safe. I immediately relaxed. A weight felt as though it had been lifted.
That night I was still tasked with soothing my little one back to sleep every two hours, but I no longer felt the need to perform my “walk-through.” Knowing that I was not alone, I was finally able to fall back to sleep in peace.
Father,
Thank You for the awesome power of Your Word. Help us to rest in the comfort of Your promises. Amen.
