"Are We Ignorant of The Holy Spirit?"

Ignorance is never bliss - especially ignorance of the Holy Spirit! Ignorance is bliss is a 'no'....ignorance of the Holy Spirit is a no-no! It doesn't seem difficult for most people to believe in God the Father, even if all they know is Psalm 23. Many people DO believe in God the Son, Jesus. Colossians is a great book emphasizing God's Revelation of Himself in Christ, and we are complete in Christ (Col. 2:10 and 4: 12)

Colossians is only 4 chapters, but can change your life if studied....and believed!
But most people, including many Christians, are atheists or at least agnostic about the Holy Spirit.

Today's study is a Bible Study on the Holy Spirit. It will be worth your study with this outline and your Bible in hand. Examine your life and see if you are theological and/or practical atheist.....or agnostic concerning the Holy Spirit. Satan will fight you hardest at studying the Holy Spirit.

I. THE BIBLICAL PICTURE OF PEOPLE AS RELATED TO THE HOLY SPIRIT:
l. Natural person: I Corinthians 2:14 "The natural person receives not the things of God, for they are spiritually discerned"
2. Spiritual person: I Cor. 2:15-16 "A spiritual person is beyond earthly explanation when the natural becomes supernatural"
3. Carnal person: I Cor. 3:1-4 "The carnal person does not understand the teachings, for they are babes in Christ"

II. THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE - Ephesians 5:14-21
l. Definition of the Spirit-filled life: Cleansed and saved by the Person and work of Christ, and controlled by the Holy Spirit. Above all Scriptures, see John 16:7-16.
2. Some hindrances to the Spirit-filled life:
a) Ignorance of the Bible and the Holy Spirit
b) Lack of faith...Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6)
c) Not yielded....Romans 6: 6-16 emphasizes 3 active verbs: know, reckon, yield.
d) Disobedient

III. OUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE HOLY SPIRIT AS A PERSON:
a) Can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30) When we say "yes" to the flesh and "no" to the Holy Spirit.
b) Can be quenched (I Thess. 5:19)
c) Can be blasphemed (Matthew 12:31-32)
d) Can be lied to (Acts 5:1-11)
e) Can be resisted (Acts 7:51)
f) Can be insulted (Heb. 10:29)
g) Can be received and known (Act 8:15)
Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (I Cor.6:19-20)

IV. PRIMARY RESULTS OF THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE:
a) Lordship of Christ (John 13:13-17)
b) Liberty (II Cor. 3:17, John 8:30 and Galatians 5:1)
c) Life (II Cor. 3:4-6; Romans 8:12-13
d) Love (Galatians 5:22-23; 6:8)

V. EPHESIANS 5:18 DISCUSSION:
a) Imperative mood - a command - He expects us to obey!
b) Passive voice - We are acted upon by God - we are baptized by the Holy Spirit at conversion (I Cor. 12:13)
c) Present tense - Continuous action - You are being filled (One baptisms...many fillings) John 7:37-39 speaks of inflow, upflow and overflow. We may not can hold much, but we can overflow a lot!
d) Plural in number - Filling is for ALL believers. We do not fill ourselves, but permit God to do so. It is received....not achieved!

VI. SUMMARY OF THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:
Creates: Genesis 1:1-2; 26-27)

Communicates: John 16:7 following: The Holy Spirit inspired writers of the Bible to write God's message. The Holy Spirit then illuminates us so that we can understand it and apply it to life.

Convicts and Converts: Acts 3:19 and Matthew 18:3

Cleanses and Sanctifies: This is positional sanctification "I am in Christ". It is also progressive sanctification "Christ in me" where life becomes 'less of me...and more of Christ'.

Calls us and wishes to Control us: This is the Lordship of Christ (Eph. 5:14-21)
We use the gifts of the Spirit with the Fruits of the Spirit.

Christ-likeness: Galatians 2:20; Philippians 1:21; Colossians 1:27; Galatians 5:22-23

Confidence: We can know that we are saved (Romans 8:16 and Matt. 10:19-20)
We are also sealed by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13-14)

Corrects and Chastens: Hebrews 12:5-10

Completes: Philippians 1:6; Romans 8:26; Col. 2:10 and 4:12 says that we are "complete in Christ"

VII. CONCLUSION
a) The secret of His incoming is Union with Christ,
like the vine and the branches of John 15.
b) The secret of His fullness is Yielding to Him daily. Romans 6:13-14
c) The secret of His constant manifestation is Abiding in Christ. I John 2:27
