Psalm 103 is an exposé of God’s and David’s choices after a wicked and despicable sin. This Psalm was written by King David late in his life - after his adultery with Bathsheba and murder of her husband, Uriah. His “encounter” with Bathsheba took place when he stayed home instead of being with his men “when kings normally go out to war” (2 Sam 11:1 NLT).

Here’s what’s interesting, and sheds light on God’s declaration that David was a man after His own heart, despite his sin (I Sam 13:14, Acts 13:22)! Look at the choices David makes. He could have responded to God with self-pity or rationalization. Or, with the king’s arrogance, he could have gotten angry with God for exposing his sin through Nathan. But instead, he was willing to lay down his self and step into God’s presence. He recounts God’s goodness and kindness to him. He recognizes God’s mercy and forgiveness, asserting, “He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve (Ps 103:10 NLT). David “sees” God. And in his humility and gratitude, he recognizes that God “sees” him.

It’s clear that God could have dealt with him so differently. God could have struck him dead. Could have taken his kingdom, revoked the promise that a Son of David would occupy his throne forever (2 Sam 7:12–16). But He didn’t. And He treats us the same way! He’s good and kind and merciful and forgiving.

Lord, please allow me to see You as You are — and to see myself as I really am. And to recognize that even in my brokenness, You see me through the lens of forgiveness and purity, bought by the blood of that Son, Who is the heir of the promise you made to David so long ago.
