Are we being knowledgeable AND wise?

While my eldest was still a teen, I remember explaining to him in a simple way the difference between knowledge and wisdom. “Knowledge is knowing things, and wisdom is knowing how to best use it.” I then explained we can be the most knowledgeable person in the world, yet be the most foolish too, for we don’t know how to wisely use what we have learned.

I’ve come to see the same is true with God and the Bible. We can learn ABOUT them, yet not wisely practice His will in our lives that His Word reveals.

Wise then is the one who becomes a willing student, who can rightfully discern His truth, and get to know God the Father through Jesus, His Son, and understand why He came to live and die among us, and know with certainty what His will is for us. It’s all in His Word, the Bible.

Jesus told a story found in Matthew 7:21-24 that drives the importance of this truth home. Read it for yourself. Chew on it a while too for it’s critical we all gain knowledge for ourself, of what the will of the Father is in our personal lives.

Jesus told how people will be at the gate of heaven who think they deserve entry because of all the wonderful and good things they have done for Him. But can you imagine the shock when they hear the words, “Go away. I never knew you.”  They had convinced themselves because of their goodness and amazing good works, they deserved heaven. But instead, they were denied entry, because they were foolish, and “Did not do the will of the Father.”

All their goodness was meaningless to God. What matters to Him is, Did they DO HIS WILL or not? We all then need to get to know God’s Word well, so we can become both knowledgeable AND wise by learning, knowing, and doing his will …and so be blessed.
