A Question of Dust

As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

for he knows how we are formed,
    he remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103: 13-14 (NIV)

“Mommy, Mommy!”

 From where she was working at the kitchen counter, Clare looked down as her four year old son tugged on her sleeve and enthusiastically blurted out his question. “They said in Sunday school that people are made out of dirt – is that true?”

At first, Clare was confused, but then she remembered that his class was going over the creation story – hence the question. With this in mind, she carefully framed her answer. “Well, the Bible says God made us from dust – I guess that’s dirt…

 “And when we die we go back to dirt…?”

“Well, that’s true.” Clare said slowly, conscious that a more complete explanation might only confuse him. “Actually the Bible says it’s dust… But what about it?”

 Johnny’s face was intensely serious. “Well, I just looked under my bed – and someone’s there and he’s either coming or going!”

Childlike curiosity aside, a scientist or Bible scholar could explain that the human body is composed of the same natural elements as dirt…or dust. Yet we also might think of another approach – that since God created us out of natural elements then he is well aware of our humanity.  An image that’s stressed in the Psalmist’s image that describes the Lord as a compassionate father – who remembers our human makeup and so responds in grace. So as he accommodates himself to us it might be to provide a bit of patience when we’re stubborn or perhaps some needed encouragement when we’re depressed.   Divine compassion for our very human limitations.

And always, for our benefit and his glory.
