No one man ever lost more; no one could teach us more about trusting God. Most of us have heard stories of individuals who lost jobs, homes, families and health through personal calamities.

Root causes vary but the end result is brokenness.

Readers of the Bible quickly recall the suffering and faithfulness of Job. I believe we all need regular reminders of the loss that preceded his personal bodily suffering. He had been a man of great wealth and influence.

“He had seven sons and three daughters. His estate included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east (Job 1:2-3 HCSB).”

God allowed Satan to test Job and the great man received devastating news…

“Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house. Suddenly a powerful wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people so that they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you (Job 1:18b-19 HCSB).”

Job lost his children and his wealth; Job lost his health.

Broken, Job could have been become bitter. Job worshiped. Would you, would I?

“Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head.He fell to the ground and worshiped, saying:

Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will leave this life.
The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.
Praise the name of Yahweh (Job 1:20-21 HCSB).”

Job TRUSTED God.

The story ends with God blessing him more than ever before.
