“We just trust God to provide.” Those five simple words radically changed my understanding of faith—and our bank account. When Ed invited me to join Tecate Mission, I thought being on a "faith mission" meant we simply shared common beliefs about Jesus and the Bible. True, but my perspective was severely limited.
A Life-Changing Call
I eagerly accepted the impressive-sounding title, "Assistant to the Director," confident my young ego could handle it. But then came the shock—there was no salary. Nada. Zero. Ed never raised funds traditionally; he simply trusted God. What?! Could God really work like that today?
I had read about Hudson Taylor, George Müller, and others who risked everything, completely dependent on God's promises. Yet that was history. Could God still operate so boldly today? It felt presumptuous, almost reckless. Yet God’s call was unmistakable.
With Psalm 40:1–3 anchoring us, we stepped into uncertainty. We quit our jobs, sold our house, gave away all the proceeds from the sale, and moved to Tecate—telling no one our financial situation. God provided miraculously, fulfilling 2 Corinthians 9:8, supplying every need abundantly, with enough left over to share.
God’s Faithfulness
In Tecate, we marveled as God provided every necessity—food, housing, clothing—never voicing our needs. Returning to San Diego, we established The Fishermen, discipling and evangelizing among military personnel and businessmen, while maintaining that same radical dependence on God. Our children were born without insurance, yet every medical bill was covered exactly, often miraculously.
Stepping off the cliff of certainty time after time always felt terrifying, yet we fell securely into God’s faithful hands with every breath-holding jump.
How about you? Are you ready to embrace complete dependence on Him? Remind Him of His promises, and then take the leap. It may look frightening, but it’s truly the safest step you’ll ever take. You can trust Him. I know it because I’ve lived it.
